US authorities raid ransomware operator, seize $2.8M in crypto

The U.S. Justice Division approved the seizure of greater than $2.8 million in cryptocurrency, money, and different property from a suspected ransomware operator, based on an Aug. 14 announcement.

Federal prosecutors unsealed six warrants tied to Ianis Aleksandrovich Antropenko, charging him with conspiring to commit pc fraud and abuse, committing pc fraud and abuse, and conspiracy to commit cash laundering.

Along with the crypto, authorities additionally seized $70,000 in money and a luxurious automobile. The digital property seized within the raid are anticipated to be added to the federal government’s rising crypto reserve.

In line with the Justice Division, the property have been linked to ransomware proceeds and laundered by way of strategies together with the now-defunct mixing service ChipMixer, which was dismantled in a global operation in 2023.

Officers stated Antropenko additionally transformed crypto to money and made structured deposits to keep away from detection.

The case marks the newest authorities motion involving crypto that could possibly be directed into the U.S. nationwide crypto reserve, created by an govt order enacted by President Donald Trump in March.

Earlier this week, the Justice Division introduced the seizure of roughly $1 million from the ransomware group BlackSuit and moved to assert $2.4 million in Bitcoin (BTC) seized by the FBI in Dallas in April.
