A Mixtec human cranium adorned with turquoise, shell, jadeite and quartz, displayed for over six many years on the Wereldmuseum in Leiden, is now within the custody of Mexico’s Nationwide Institute of Anthropology and Historical past (INAH). The stays, whose mosaic embellishment was probably assembled in trendy occasions, have been repatriated to Mexico in Might 2025 following an initiative by the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective and the Mexican artist Daniel Aguilar Ruvalcaba. The Yucu Saa Group Museum in Villa de Tututepec, Oaxaca, is the ancestor’s deliberate last vacation spot.

The cranium’s previous is complicated. In 1964, the Wereldmuseum’s then-director Pieter Hendrik Pott acquired it from the American supplier Robert Stolper. Though missing provenance information, it was believed so far to the Late Postclassic Interval (AD1300-AD1521) and was proven within the museum’s Central and South American gallery.

Considerations about its authenticity prompted analyses in 2011 and 2012, which have been printed in a 2013 paper by the archaeologist Martin Berger. The research point out that the cranium belonged to a male who was between 35 and 49 years of age, from southern Mexico, supporting a Mixtec affiliation. The mosaic supplies are pre-Hispanic, although some shells have been probably buried earlier and 99% of the adhesive is trendy.

“The cranium as we see it at this time is clearly a contemporary mixture of historical components,” Berger tells The Artwork Newspaper. “It was probably created in Puebla and Oaxaca’s border area, the place turquoise has been present in dry caves together with burials.” Within the press launch saying the stays’ returns, INAH says the cranium could bear additional research, probably together with radiocarbon relationship.

The cranium is certainly one of ten related examples, most of that are trendy combos. In contrast, the one turquoise-mosaic cranium present in an archaeological context is the one from Monte Albán’s Tomb Seven, found within the Thirties. However that cranium differs in type and performance from the opposite examples. For Berger, the current instance illustrates how Indigenous ancestors have been disrespected “in service of the worldwide artwork market”, but additionally how they are often reappropriated into neighborhood histories.

In 2022, Aguilar realized of the cranium throughout a residency on the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam. Aguilar’s venture led to a restitution effort. He partnered with the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective, based in 2020 by Mixtec specialists to advertise the Ñuu Savi (folks of the rain) language, tradition and rights. The Yucu Saa neighborhood museum later joined the marketing campaign, holding neighborhood workshops.

The group labored on a restitution petition. However in 2023, Mexican authorities made a separate request, which was accepted by Dutch officers in December 2024. Aguilar says the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective’s marketing campaign was disregarded, prompting 1,020 Tututepec residents to petition the INAH to show the ancestor at their neighborhood’s museum. “There was a good quantity of institutional ghosting; authorities took over a 12 months to reply,” Aguilar says.

Mexican authorities have since acknowledged the collective’s work. “We recognise the collective’s initiative, whose work contributed to the cranium’s return and its reconnection with neighborhood reminiscence,” tradition minister Claudia Curiel says.

“Past archaeological debates on authenticity or its origin, looting impacts collective reminiscence,” a consultant of the Nchivi Ñuu Savi collective says, describing its return to the museum as an “act of historic justice and dignity”. The shortage of provenance, the consultant provides, is a consequence of violence. “That is additionally an act of recognition and respect for our ancestors, their reminiscence and our bond with them.”

Raúl López Nicolás, the director of the Yucu Saa Museum, says representatives of the INAH visited his establishment on 15 June and later knowledgeable them that the ancestor will first be exhibited on the Museo de las Culturas de Oaxaca. Its show in Villa de Tututepec is deliberate for April 2027, as soon as situations are in place. “We’re at present working to enhance safety and exhibition situations,” López says.

To those that advocated for the ancestor’s return to the Mixtec neighborhood, this case may set a significant precedent for future restitution efforts in Mexico. “We need to show that well-organised communities can safeguard our heritage below the best requirements,” López says. “This debunks the centralist notion that these items can solely be exhibited on the large nationwide museums.”
