Hargreaves Lansdown Reverses Course, Rolls Out Bitcoin Trading

British monetary providers agency Hargreaves Lansdown is letting retail traders purchase bitcoin — almost one 12 months after it mentioned the cryptocurrency was “not an asset class.” 

The Bristol, UK-based funding agency’s web site mentioned it was providing bitcoin and different crypto exchange-traded notes to traders. ETNs are funding funds which commerce on inventory exchanges and monitor the costs of digital property. 

It comes after the agency, which manages almost £173 billion (over $233 billion) in property, final 12 months warned clients about shopping for bitcoin. 

“Whereas longer-term returns of Bitcoin have been constructive, Bitcoin has skilled a number of durations of maximum losses and is a extremely risky funding — a lot riskier than shares or bonds,” the agency mentioned on the time. 

“The HL Funding view is that Bitcoin shouldn’t be an asset class, and we don’t suppose cryptocurrency has traits that imply it must be included in portfolios for development or earnings and shouldn’t be relied upon to assist purchasers meet their monetary targets.” 

Now, a lot of ETNs monitoring the value of bitcoin and different cryptocurrencies can be found. The agency warns customers that “crypto ETNs are thought of high-risk and could also be risky.”
