The British Museum (BM) introduced as we speak (20 January) that 79,616 archaeological discoveries had been uncovered by members of the general public in 2024 whereas 1,540 of the finds had been thought-about “treasure” (as outlined by the UK’s Treasure Act 1996). “These record-breaking figures are due largely to metallic detectorists, who account for 94% of recorded finds,” a BM assertion says. Greater than 7,000 objects had been found in Norfolk, within the east of England, alone whereas North Yorkshire recorded the best numbers of treasure finds (109).

All the discoveries are registered below the Transportable Antiquities Scheme (PAS), a mission that goals to report archaeological objects discovered by members of the general public in England and Wales. Managed by the British Museum in partnership with Amgueddfa Cymru-Nationwide Museum Wales, PAS makes discoveries publicly out there on a web based database.

The hoard of 179 pennies could have been deposited late in Harold II’s reign and will have been buried across the time of the Norwegian invasion of England in September 1066 by King Harald Hardrada, museum officers say. Nicholas Cullinan, the director of the British Museum, says: “The British Museum is happy with its position in managing the Transportable Antiquities Scheme and the treasure course of. Collectively, they’re very important instruments for preserving and recording Britain’s previous, making certain that outstanding discoveries made by the general public are protected, studied and made accessible to everybody.”
